Join us for the opening reception of James Holl's "From Energy, Matter Emerges"!
The reception will be a chance to engage with James Holl's artwork, connect with the artist, and learn more about his fascinating journey.
From Energy, Matter Emerges comprises select works from James Holl’s large-scale oil on panel Particle Point Collisions paintings. Particle Point Collisions explores the notion that all of nature, at its fundamental core, is dots (squares) and lines, points of energy imagined in time resulting from the collision of quantum particles shot at each other at the speed of light.
As Holl describes, “the Particle Point paintings [express this energy] through color that
vibrates in the eye, as does music to the ear. “Color,” states Holl, “is a means essential to express energy and the music of one’s soul.”
Holl’s outdoor sculpture, Electron Neutrino, also furthers the idea all natural phenomena emerge at a very small scale. This threshold, called a Planck length, cannot be seen at their scale, but can be measured and imagined. “When we think of the scale of things,” suggests Holl, “we generally measure what is large or small in comparison to human scale, the size of ourselves. If we regard the 2.3358-meter height and width of the Electron Neutrino sculpture seen through the gallery window, not to human scale but to the scale of the Planck length, we may consider it to be the largest sculpture ever made by humankind.”
