Fall Celebration at TurnPark

October 12, 2019, 3:00pm – 5:00pm

Rain date Sunday, October 13, 3-5pm

Come celebrate the end of our busy season! Please join us on Saturday, October 12th from 3-5 PM for an Opening Reception of Kara Smith's installation "Origins of Memory", Jared Gelormino's new interactive sculpture "Sticks and Stones", Live music with LI, and a site-specific dance performance by VEERdance.

Light refreshments will be served. This is a free event.

With Origins of Memory, Kara tries to capture the age-old wisdom of stones by using gold leaf to accentuate the natural surface markings and eroded areas. The larger stones reflect a collective human and natural history; the smaller stones in the necklaces a personal and individual memory. We're pleased to announce that Kara Smith's unique Gold Leaf & Stone Jewelry is now available in the TurnPark Art Space Gift Shop! The TurnPark Specimens is a line of pendant necklaces created with stones found within the Park and accented with 23 karat gold leaf. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and comes with its own detailed field label. Kara's project continues where she has installed site-specific works involving her signature gold leaf on larger stones throughout the park.

Kara Smith is a NY based artist and educator living and working in the Hudson Valley. She received a Master of Arts in Art Education and a New York State Teaching Certification from Brooklyn College, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. In addition to several years as an arts educator in Brooklyn, she has been a dresser at the Metropolitan Opera, a freelance art director and prop stylist, and an arts administrator at galleries in Boston, Los Angeles and New York. She currently works for Community Access to the Arts, a non-profit arts organization that provides visual and performing arts workshop to individuals with disabilities, where she teaches, and manages the crafts cooperative and exhibition program.

Jared Gelormino is the Site Manager at TurnPark Art Space. He holds an MFA in Ceramics from Indiana University and a BFA in Ceramics from Maine College of Art. In addition to exhibiting his work in solo and group shows throughout the country, he has taught art to all ages for over 15 years and has been a resident artist at numerous ceramics studios.

VEERdance is a Western MA based dance company founded by Fern Katz, Taylor King, and Verity Nichols. Their varied techniques and backgrounds converge to form an intensely physical, curious, and emotive contemporary dance company. Blending contact and theatrics, the three dancers build a narrative through their collaborative choreography.
